TIPS ON WRITING A NOVEL

​​So, your want to be an author of a novel or a non-fiction book. People tell me, "I have this idea for a novel. How do I start writing this novel? Where can I go to learn how to write my novel? I normally tell them--or you if your reading this--there are many sites on the web where to learn the ins and outs of writing a novel. You can go to a serach engine such as Google or Bing and type: How do I write a novel? You'll get many answers. Which ones do I choose? Unfortunately, some of the sites you'll have to dish out a few bucks to many bucks in order to obtain the knowlege and guidance. Or you can just start reading and reading one article after another until your mind is filled with a conglomeration of facts. You may say to yourself: " What the hell did I just read? Or you may say, "What the heck did I just read?"

​Before you do anything, you have to determine what genre your fiction novel will be. There are several main genres: Romance, Mystery, Thrillers, Horror, Western, Science Fiction, Historical Fiction and Fantasy. You can find genre lists in the thirties. As far as I'm concerned, the eight genres I've listed are the major ones.There are also subgenres: paranormal, supernatural, time travel, medical thriller, legal thriller, technical thriller, action/adventure, suspense to mention a few that can be part of the main genres. The best thing you can do is read a novel you think your story will fit into. If it's a horror story read Stephen King, a medical thriller read Tess Gerritsen, and etc. While you're reading  your chosen novel see how the author grabs your interest in the first chapter. Observe the story's sentence structure. You will develop your own style of writing.
